Thank you all for the kind words. OK, here is the full story of SPOT! In spite of rain, thunderstorms, high winds—brief hail, even!—the piece is up. The sculpture was designed for NYU Langone’s new Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital on 34th Street, just east of First Avenue. It’s been made for children at every turn, and is going to be an amazing hospital. It’s a privilege to be able to do this for the kids. I wanted to make something so astounding it would distract even those arriving for the most serious procedures, and so lovable that young patients coming back again and again with chronic conditions would see it as an old friend. I like to think that the parents, the doctors and nurses and staff, the neighbors, will all be smitten by this playful, heroic young dog doing the impossible. Art has actual healing power. That’s a fact! This is my neighborhood, and this is my hospital. I can see it from our terrace, and we go by it every day on the way home from the studio. All my doctors have been there since I moved to NY in the 70s; I’ve had surgeries there, been in studies there, gone to the emergency room there, etc. etc. So this is a special piece for me in so many ways. The Hassenfeld family, which started the Hasbro toy company, were major doners for building the hospital. This influenced my thinking. I wanted it to be about toys and play in some way. The taxi is a Prius, which Toyota gave me for the piece—no engine, tranny, seats, etc. (although the lights work, and—when it rains, the wipers!) #Donaldlipski #nyulangone #nyulangoneartprogram #toyotausa #prius #dalmatian #childrenshospital #johngrant #fastcorp #crozierfinearts #christophercollins #yetiweurks
